Winter pressures and the case for accessible healthcare

As we move deeper into the winter months, the NHS in England continues to experience intense pressure.

From rising flu cases to stretched hospital services and a strike by resident doctors in the run-up to Christmas; these factors highlight once again why proactive, accessible care, including private GP services, matters more than ever for individuals and families.

A ‘worst-case scenario’ for health services

Recent reports show that flu cases across England surged sharply in the weeks leading up to mid-December, with hospital admissions for influenza increasing by more than 55% in a single week and reaching record levels for the time of year. NHS England described the situation as a “worst-case scenario”, putting tremendous strain on emergency departments and respiratory wards.

Against this backdrop, resident doctors (formerly known as junior doctors) went ahead with a five-day strike in mid-December, following ongoing disputes around pay and working conditions. The walkout took place during a period of intense winter pressure, prompting warnings from NHS leaders that industrial action could further stretch already-pressurised services.

Impact on patients and availability of care

For most people, winter is a familiar season of coughs and sniffles, but this year the combination of intense flu spread, other seasonal viruses and workforce shortages mean routine access to NHS services could be slower or less predictable than usual. Waiting times in emergency departments have lengthened in some areas and well-being concerns are rising as hospital staff juggle high demand.

This isn’t just about flu, it’s about availability of care when you need it most. When primary care and NHS services are stretched, patients may face longer waits for appointments, difficulty obtaining same-day advice, or pressure to use urgent care for issues that would typically be managed in general practice.

Personal choice and the role of private care

At times like these, private GP services can act as a pragmatic complement to public health pathways. Not a replacement for the NHS, but an option that provides:

  • Timely consultations when NHS appointments are delayed

  • Same-day or next-day access to a GP either in person or via virtual appointment

  • Preventive support to help manage seasonal respiratory symptoms before they become serious

  • A clear care pathway when patients want extra reassurance and continuity

While many people access the NHS for primary care, others find that empowered choice - knowing they can consult a GP sooner when needed - reduces anxiety and helps them manage health issues proactively.

Avoiding GP appointments altogether

Obviously the ‘best-case’ scenario would be to stay fit and well, and avoid a visit to the doctor altogether. Whether the system feels strained or not, there are sensible steps everyone can take this winter.

  • Get your flu vaccination: the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) urges eligible people to get jabbed

  • Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations where indicated.

  • Seek early advice if symptoms are worsening or you’re in a higher-risk group.

  • Know when to use urgent care: call 111 or use NHS 111 online for non-life-threatening conditions.

  • Keep routine care scheduled: don’t delay regular health checks or longstanding condition reviews.
